3 USPS Changes Every Business Shipper Should Know Before July 12

If your business ships with USPS Ground Advantage or Priority Mail, several important pricing and shipping rule changes will take effect on July 12, 2026. While these updates are designed to align USPS more closely with other major carriers, they could also increase shipping costs or create unexpected fees for businesses that are not prepared.

Here's a breakdown of the three most important changes and what they mean for your business.

1. USPS Larger Packages May Cost More

USPS is changing how it calculates Dimensional (DIM) Weight by lowering the DIM divisor from 166 to 139, matching the methodology already used by FedEx and UPS. In addition, any package measurement that includes fractions will now be rounded up to the next whole inch.

What does this mean?

If you ship lightweight but bulky packages, you may notice higher shipping costs even though the actual weight of your package hasn't changed.

For example:

  • Oversized boxes

  • Products with excess packaging

  • Low-density items

These shipments are the most likely to be affected by the new DIM weight calculation.

Our recommendation

Review your packaging and eliminate unnecessary empty space whenever possible. Even small adjustments to box size can help reduce shipping costs over time.

2. Accurate Package Dimensions Are More Important Than Ever

Previously, USPS only required dimensional information for larger packages. Beginning July 12, all Ground Advantage and Priority Mail shipments will require accurate package dimensions, regardless of package size.

Although USPS will begin enforcing penalties for newly eligible shipments in early 2027, businesses should begin preparing now.

Why this matters

Incorrect package dimensions may result in:

  • Additional adjustment charges

  • Noncompliance fees

  • Unexpected billing corrections

For businesses shipping high volumes, these costs can add up quickly.

Our recommendation

Make sure your shipping software, warehouse system, or shipping team is recording package dimensions accurately before labels are created.

3. Shipping Small Packages Will Become More Expensive

USPS is also simplifying pricing for sub-pound Ground Advantage Commercial shipments by eliminating ounce-based pricing differences.

What does this mean?

Businesses shipping lightweight products may see shipping costs increase depending on package weight and shipping zone.

This change is especially important for:

  • E-commerce sellers

  • Subscription box companies

  • Small retail businesses

  • Businesses shipping lightweight merchandise

Reviewing your shipping profile now can help identify opportunities to offset these increases.

How Your Business Can Prepare

These USPS updates don't necessarily mean every shipment will cost more. However, they do make it more important than ever to understand your shipping data.

Before July 12, we recommend:

  • Review your box sizes and packaging methods.

  • Verify that package dimensions are entered accurately.

  • Evaluate whether USPS is still the best option for every shipment.

  • Monitor the impact on lightweight Ground Advantage packages.

Taking these steps now can help prevent unexpected costs later.
